Structure · Timing · Scoring · Test Day
The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) is the standardized aptitude test the U.S. Air Force uses to select candidates for officer commissioning programs. It plays a central role in determining eligibility for officer training and for career paths including pilot, combat systems officer, air battle manager, and technical specialties.
Why Is the AFOQT Important?
The AFOQT is more than an academic test; it is a broad evaluation of the aptitudes an Air Force officer needs. Scores are used for selection into officer training programs and to qualify candidates for specialized career tracks, so a strong performance directly expands your options.
Exam Pattern and Structure
The AFOQT is a multiple-choice test made up of 12 separately timed subtests. Together they measure verbal, quantitative, and spatial reasoning, situational judgment, and job-specific knowledge relevant to the Air Force.

Test Day At A Glance
About 3 hours 37 minutes of timed testing; plan on roughly 5 hours including instructions and breaks. Calculators are not permitted. Every calculation is done by hand.
Your score is based on the number of correct answers; there is no penalty for guessing.
Composite scores are reported as percentiles from 1 to 99. Retests are allowed no sooner than 90 days after the previous attempt; a third attempt may require a waiver.
AFOQT scores do not expire.
Scoring
Subtest results are combined into composite scores. Each composite is reported as a percentile from 1 to 99, showing how you performed relative to a reference group of examinees. Different composites qualify you for different career fields.

Exam Tip
Minimums are only the entry point. Selection boards for competitive career fields, especially pilot, consider how far above the minimum your composites fall, so aim well above the qualifying scores.
Administration
The AFOQT is scheduled through an Air Force ROTC detachment, an officer recruiter, or a military testing site. There is no fee to take the test. Coordinate with your detachment or recruiter to schedule a test date, and bring a valid government- issued photo ID on test day.
