Exam Overview
What Is an Algebra I End-of-Course Exam?
Algebra I is the course most states test with an end-of-course (EOC) exam. There is no single national Algebra I test: each state writes its own, but the exams assess the same core skills — linear equations, inequalities and functions; systems; polynomials and factoring; quadratic and exponential functions; and interpreting data. Many states require a passing score for graduation or count the EOC toward the course grade.
Exam Pattern
The four largest state Algebra I exams look like this. Always confirm the current details with your state's department of education, because formats and policies are updated.
| Exam | Format | Questions and scoring | Calculator |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York Regents Examination in Algebra I | Paper; 3 hours; four parts | 35 questions: Part I has 24 multiple-choice (2 credits each); Parts II–IV are constructed response (82 credits in all). A scale score of 65 is the standard passing score. | Graphing calculator and straightedge required; reference sheet provided |
| Texas STAAR Algebra I EOC | Online | 50 questions worth 59 points: 41 one-point items (multiple-choice and other types) and 9 two-point items, across 5 reporting categories | Graphing calculator required (available in the online platform) |
| Florida B.E.S.T. Algebra 1 EOC | Computer-based; one 160-minute session with a short break after 80 minutes | Reported as Achievement Levels 1–5; Level 3 and above is on grade level | Online scientific calculator and reference sheet provided |
| Louisiana LEAP Algebra I | Online | Multiple-choice and constructed-response items; check the LEAP assessment guide for the current design | Check the current LEAP calculator policy |
