Study Schedules
The examination is passed by steady coverage of all four domains. The schedules below spread the sixteen chapters across four, eight, or twelve weeks and reserve the final part of every plan for the two full-length practice tests. Choose the plan that fits the time before the test date, then adjust it for the chapters that need more work.
Building a Plan
Four-Week Intensive Plan
For candidates with about one month, studying two to three hours a day.
| Week | Chapters | Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–5 Scientific Concepts | Infection control first; then structure, disorders, anatomy, and chemistry. Memorize the disorder tables and the pH scale. |
| 2 | 6–10 Hair care and design | Consultation and tests, tools, shampoo and scalp care, haircutting, styling, and enhancements. |
| 3 | 11–16 Chemical, skin, and nail services | Haircolor and texture services early in the week; skin and nail chapters at the end. Take Practice Test 1. |
| 4 | Review | Reread the chapters behind missed items, take Practice Test 2, and review every Chapter Review box. |
Eight-Week Balanced Plan
For candidates with two months, studying about one and a half hours a day.
| Week | Chapters | Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Disease transmission, the three levels of decontamination, the blood exposure procedure, OSHA and EPA. |
| 2 | 2–3 | Structure of the hair, skin, and nails; disorders and their signs. |
| 3 | 4–5 | Muscles, nerves, and circulation; chemistry, pH, and product ingredients. |
| 4 | 6–8 | Consultation, analysis, and tests; tools; draping, shampooing, and scalp care. |
| 5 | 9–10 | Haircutting; design principles, wet and thermal styling, natural hair, and enhancements. |
| 6 | 11–12 | Haircolor and lightening; permanent waving and relaxing. |
| 7 | 13–16 | Skin and nail services. Take Practice Test 1 at the end of the week. |
| 8 | Review | Rework weak chapters, take Practice Test 2, and finish with the Chapter Review boxes. |
Twelve-Week Comprehensive Plan
For candidates who prefer a slower pace, studying about one hour a day with a longer session on weekends.
| Weeks | Chapters | Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 1 | Infection control and safety in full; write out the blood exposure procedure from memory. |
| 3–4 | 2–3 | Structure and growth of the hair, the skin layers, the nail unit, and every disorder table. |
| 5 | 4–5 | Muscles, nerves, arteries, and basic chemistry. |
| 6 | 6–7 | Consultation, contraindications, preliminary tests, records, and tools. |
| 7–8 | 8–10 | Hair care procedures, haircutting, styling, natural hair, and enhancements. |
| 9–10 | 11–12 | Haircolor, lightening, permanent waving, and relaxing, with formulation practice. |
| 11 | 13–16 | Skin and nail services. Take Practice Test 1. |
| 12 | Review | Targeted review, Practice Test 2, and a final pass through the Chapter Review boxes. |
Study Methods That Work
Matching Study Time to the Examination
Study time is best divided in proportion to the scored items each domain supplies, with extra time for chapters rated weak. The table converts the domain weights into a share of total study hours and names the chapters where that time is spent.
| Domain | Scored items | Share of study time | Chapters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scientific Concepts | 35 | About one-third | 1–5 |
| Hair Care and Services | 45 | Nearly one-half | 6–12 |
| Skin Care and Services | 10 | About one-tenth | 13–14 |
| Nail Care and Services | 10 | About one-tenth | 15–16 |
| Result by topic | Action |
|---|---|
| Most items correct | Read the explanations for the misses only; no further review needed |
| About one item in four missed | Reread the Chapter Review boxes and the tables for that topic |
| One item in three or more missed | Restudy the full chapters behind the topic, then rework the missed items |
Final-Week Checklist
