Exam Overview
CSET: Mathematics is a computer-based exam given at Pearson VUE testing centers year-round by appointment, Monday through Saturday. Each subtest is scored separately, and you may take one subtest or several in the same session. Each subtest combines multiple-choice questions with constructed-response assignments, where you show your work and reasoning.
Key Facts About CSET: Mathematics

The Three Subtests
Subtest Format at a Glance
| Subtest | Content | Multiple-Choice | Constructed-Response | Testing Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I (211) | Number and Quantity; Algebra | 35 (10 and 25) | 3 (1 and 2) | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| II (212) | Geometry; Probability and Statistics | 35 (25 and 10) | 3 (2 and 1) | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| III (213) | Calculus | 30 | 2 | 2 hours |
Algebra and Geometry carry the most multiple-choice questions on their subtests. Subtest III is shorter but covers trigonometry, limits, derivatives, integrals and series, all without a calculator.
Calculator Rules
A calculator is allowed on Subtest II only, and none is provided: you bring your own approved graphing calculator. The approved list includes the TI-73, TI-83 family, TI-84 family (including the TI-84 Plus CE) and the TI-Nspire handheld with the TI-84 Plus keypad. Manuals are not allowed, and staff clear the calculator's memory before and after testing, so back up anything you want to keep. On Subtests I and III, every question is designed to be worked by hand.
How the Test Is Scored
Multiple-choice questions are scored by the number you answer correctly, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question. Some questions are being tried out for future tests and do not count, but you cannot tell which ones, so treat every question as scored.
Constructed responses are scored by at least two qualified California educators on a scale from 4 (strongest) to 1. A response that is blank or unscorable receives no points. Scorers look at how well you address the assignment, how accurate your mathematics is, how well you support your work, and the depth and breadth of your understanding. Your multiple-choice and constructed-response results are combined into a scaled score from 100 to 300 for each subtest, and you need 220 to pass that subtest.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Computation problems that need two or three steps, such as finding complex roots, a regression line or an integral
- Proof-based questions: which property justifies a step, which statement must be true, which counterexample disproves a claim
- Questions built on a described figure, an operation table, a matrix, a data table or a set of proof steps
- Applied problems that model a real situation with functions, geometry, probability or calculus
- Constructed-response assignments that ask for a proof, a complete solution with justification, or an explanation of a concept
What Happens After the Test
- Results are usually released within about seven weeks, on the published score-report date.
- Your report shows a pass or fail result for each subtest you took, with performance information by domain.
- Passed subtests stay passed: you only retake the subtests you did not pass.
- Passing results can be used toward a California credential for 10 years from the test date.
