Question 1 · Linguistics of the Target Language
Answer: D. allophones of one phoneme in complementary distribution
[pʰ] and [p] never occur in the same environment (complementary distribution), and swapping them never changes meaning, so they are allophones of one phoneme, /p/. A minimal pair would require the two sounds to distinguish two words, which they never do in English.
Question 2 · Instruction and Assessment
Answer: A. ins-truc-tor
Spanish onsets cannot begin with s + consonant, so the s closes the first syllable, and tr stays together as an onset cluster: ins-truc-tor . The others are wrong because br is an inseparable cluster ( a-bri-ga-do ), rr is a single sound never split ( ca-rre-te-ra ), and a single consonant between vowels goes with the following vowel ( pa-se-a-ban ).
Question 3 · Literature, Culture and Context
Volverán las oscuras golondrinas / en tu balcón sus nidos a colgar, / y otra vez con el ala a sus cristales / jugando llamarán.
Answer: B. Rima asonante; late Romanticism (posromanticismo)
Colgar and llamarán share only the stressed vowel a ; consonant rhyme would require identical sounds from the stressed vowel on ( -ar vs. -án differ), so the rhyme is asonante . The lines come from Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer's Rimas , whose short, confessional, musical poems define Spanish posromanticismo . Modernismo would show ornate exotic imagery, and Realismo turned mainly to the novel.
Question 4 · Literature, Culture and Context
Answer: B. The forced disappearance of thousands under the last military dictatorship
The Madres de Plaza de Mayo began protesting during the military regime's Proceso de Reorganización Nacional to demand news of the desaparecidos , people kidnapped and killed by state forces. Their white headscarves recalled the cloth diapers of their missing children. The Malvinas war came later under the same regime but was not the cause of the marches, and the Bogotazo took place in Colombia.
Question 5 · Bilingual Education
A district's elementary dual-language program produces strong Spanish literacy by grade 5. In middle school, program graduates are placed in Spanish 1 with beginners, their elementary language records are not passed on to the high school, and most stop studying Spanish by ninth grade.
Answer: B. Alignment and articulation within and across systems
The Roadmap's principle of alignment and articulation within and across systems calls for a coherent, continuous progression of language development from preschool through high school; placing program graduates with beginners and failing to pass records forward is a break in exactly that articulation. Assets-oriented and needs-responsive schools is tempting because the students' Spanish is an asset being ignored, but the failure described lies in the transitions between school levels, not in how any one school values or responds to its learners.
Question 6 · Linguistics of the Target Language
Spanish-speaking learners of English: speak → [esˈpik] · student → [esˈtudənt] · school → [esˈkul]
Answer: B. vowel epenthesis repairing an onset cluster the first language bans word-initially
Spanish phonotactics do not allow /s/ + consonant at the start of a word (compare Latin schola > escuela , spatha > espada ), so learners insert [e] before the cluster, a word-initial epenthesis (prothesis) that lets /s/ close the syllable es- . Metathesis reorders existing sounds ( aks for ask ); here a new vowel is added and nothing is reordered.
Question 7 · Instruction and Assessment
(1) No sé dónde vive.
(2) Vive donde trabaja su padre.
Answer: C. In 1 it introduces an indirect question and is stressed; in 2 it is an unstressed relative adverb
Interrogative and exclamative words keep their accent in indirect questions ( No sé dónde vive = 'I don't know where he lives'), whereas relative donde is unstressed and unaccented. The accent has nothing to do with the preceding negation.
Question 8 · Literature, Culture and Context
Answer: C. El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega; Comentarios reales de los Incas
El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega , son of a conquistador and the ñusta Isabel Chimpu Ocllo, wrote the Comentarios reales in Spain, presenting himself as a mestizo mediator whose native Quechua gave him authority over Spanish chroniclers. Guamán Poma was also an Andean author, but he wrote an illustrated letter to the king denouncing colonial abuses and was not a mestizo living in Spain. Bernal Díaz wrote of the conquest of Mexico, and Las Casas denounced the destruction of the Indies.
Question 9 · Literature, Culture and Context
Answer: D. It softens the hull and frees niacin, preventing disease in maize-based diets
Nixtamalization loosens the hull, improves the dough's texture and makes niacin available, which is why Mesoamerican peoples who ate maize daily did not suffer pellagra , while populations in Europe and the U.S. South who adopted maize without the process did. The technique is pre-Columbian, not a Spanish introduction, and tortillas and tamales, not fermented drinks, were the staple.
Question 10 · Bilingual Education
Two seventh graders arrive from El Salvador with similar oral English. Rosa attended school without interruption and reads at grade level in Spanish. Daniel's schooling was interrupted for three years, and he reads in Spanish at a second-grade level.
Answer: C. Rosa will progress faster, because reading skills and concepts built in Spanish transfer through a common underlying proficiency.
Cummins's interdependence hypothesis holds that academic skills and conceptual knowledge developed in one language rest on a common underlying proficiency (the "iceberg") and transfer to a second language once exposure is adequate. Rosa's grade-level Spanish literacy is therefore an asset; the view that it interferes reflects the separate underlying proficiency model Cummins rejected.
