Exam Overview
FNP board certification marks the transition from registered nurse to advanced practice provider. It verifies your expertise in family practice and your readiness to meet the health needs of patients across the lifespan: making diagnostic and treatment decisions, prescribing, and delivering preventive, patient-centered care. Two organizations offer national FNP certification, and either credential satisfies APRN licensure requirements in most states.

The AANPCB Blueprint
The AANPCB exam classifies every scored question in two ways: by the clinical task it tests and by the age of the patient in the scenario. Assessment carries the greatest weight, and more than half of the questions involve adults aged 18 and older.

The ANCC Blueprint
The ANCC test content outline follows the nursing process across five domains: Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. Implementation is the largest domain. The current outline also addresses interpreting diagnostic results, social determinants of health and sexual health in risk assessment, and the responsible and ethical use of information technology, including artificial intelligence. ANCC periodically updates its outline and reference list, so review the version in effect on your test date before you schedule.
The content in this guide is organized into four sections (Assessment, Diagnosis, Clinical Management, and Professional Role) that together cover both exams. The AANPCB exam draws most heavily on Sections 1 through 3; the ANCC exam uses all four, with more emphasis on the professional role, policy, and evidence-based practice content in Section 4.
