Exam Overview
The Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) is the first stage of the selection process for U.S. Foreign Service Officers. As an FSO, you will represent the United States around the world, promote diplomatic relations, advance U.S. interests, and work on global challenges. The FSOT assesses the knowledge and skills this career requires, and strong performance is the first step toward joining the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service.
Exam Structure and Format
The FSOT is a computer-based, closed-book exam delivered by Pearson VUE. The current test has three multiple-choice sections, each separately timed. Every question has four answer options, and there is no penalty for guessing.

The FSOT no longer includes a written essay, a Situational Judgment section, or a Biographical Information Questionnaire, and personal narratives are no longer part of the application. Job Knowledge now focuses on U.S. government, history, and society; world history and geography; economics; and mathematics and statistics.

Scoring and Selection
The FSOT has no published passing score. The Department of State selects candidates to advance to the next stage based on the highest scores and the needs of the Foreign Service, so every correct answer counts. Candidates are notified by email whether they have been invited to the next stage, typically several weeks after the testing window closes.

The Importance of the FSOT
The FSOT is the foundation of the selection process, ensuring that candidates have the knowledge and skills diplomatic service requires. It evaluates competencies Foreign Service Officers rely on every day, from understanding how the U.S. government functions to reading carefully and reasoning soundly in complex international settings. The selection process is highly competitive, and the FSOT separates the most promising candidates for further assessment. Excelling on it can lead to a life-changing career in public service, global understanding, and diplomatic engagement.
