Contrastive Analysis · Sociolinguistics
Contrastive analysis compares linguistic features across languages to predict and explain learner difficulties. While the strong form of contrastive analysis (predicting all errors from L1 differences) has been discredited, understanding cross-linguistic differences remains valuable.
Positive transfer occurs when L1 features align with L2, facilitating acquisition. Spanish speakers learning English benefit from similar alphabetic systems and shared Latin-origin vocabulary.
Negative transfer (interference) occurs when L1 patterns inappropriately influence L2 production. Japanese speakers may omit articles because Japanese lacks an article system.
Cognates are words with similar form and meaning across languages due to shared etymology. Spanish-English cognates (educación/education, importante/important) support vocabulary development.
False cognates (false friends) share similar forms but differ in meaning. Spanish "embarazada" means pregnant, not embarrassed.
Teachers should analyze the linguistic backgrounds of their students to anticipate transfer effects and design targeted instruction.
Sociolinguistics examines relationships between language and society. Social factors influence language variation, language attitudes, and language policy.
Dialects are regional or social varieties of a language. All speakers use dialects; "standard" varieties hold social prestige rather than linguistic superiority.
Registers are situational varieties. Speakers adjust formality, vocabulary, and syntax based on context.
Code-switching involves alternating between languages or dialects within a conversation or utterance. Code-switching is a sophisticated linguistic skill, not a sign of confusion.
Language attitudes affect how speakers perceive themselves and others. Negative attitudes toward non-standard varieties can harm student self-concept and academic performance.
