Subareas and Weights
Subareas of the GACE Paraprofessional Test
| Subarea | What It Covers | Share of Score | About How Many Questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| I. Reading Skills | Word structure and context clues; main idea and supporting details; basic comprehension | 33.3% | 30 |
| II. Writing Skills | Standard written English usage; grammatical structure; the writing process and purpose | 33.3% | 30 |
| III. Mathematics Skills | Numerical reasoning; patterns and algebraic, geometric and spatial reasoning; measurement and data reasoning | 33.3% | 30 |
Because the three subareas are equal, a weak area costs you as much as a strong area earns you. Most candidates gain the most points by shoring up math and grammar rules they have not used in years.
How the Test Is Scored
Your score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly, converted to a scaled score from 100 to 300. You need 220 to pass. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank. Different versions of the test have slightly different questions, so the number of correct answers needed to reach 220 can vary a little from one version to another.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Reading questions based on short passages, notices, charts, poems and stories, asking about word meanings, main ideas, details, inferences and text structure
- Writing questions that ask you to find an error in a sentence, choose the correct form of a word, or improve a short draft divided into numbered sentences
- Math word problems built on everyday and school situations, tables, graphs and simple diagrams
- Application questions that place you in a classroom, such as helping a student use context clues, responding to a student's draft, or finding the step where a student's math work went wrong
What Happens After the Test
- Scores are usually available about two weeks after you test.
- Your report shows whether you passed and how you did in each subarea.
- If you do not pass, use the subarea results to plan your study, wait the required time and register again.
- Make sure your score is reported to, or shared with, the school system that is requesting your license.
