Exam Overview
Theged®Mathematicalreasoningtest
The GED® exam is developed and administered by GED Testing Service and consists of four subject tests: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. A passing score on all four earns a high school equivalency credential issued by your state or jurisdiction. The Mathematical Reasoning test measures your ability to use math concepts, measurement, equations, and data to solve real-life problems. Each subject is scheduled and scored separately, so you can take Mathematical Reasoning on its own and retake it without repeating the other subjects.
Exam Structure and Pattern
The test is taken on a computer and has about 46 questions to complete in 115 minutes (1 hour and 55 minutes), about 2½ minutes per question. It is divided into two parts. Once you move from Part 1 to Part 2, you cannot return to Part 1.

Question Types
Most questions are multiple choice, but the test also uses technology-enhanced formats. Each question typically counts equally toward your score, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

Calculator and Formula Sheet
A formula sheet is available on screen for the whole test, so you do not need to memorize area, perimeter, surface area, and volume formulas, the mean and median, slope and the forms of a linear equation, the standard form of a quadratic and the quadratic formula, the Pythagorean theorem, simple interest, distance, or total cost. The sheet does not list unit conversions, angle facts, or probability rules; learn those. A calculator reference sheet explains the TI-30XS MultiView keys. Knowing where each formula sits on the sheet and practicing with the calculator before test day saves valuable minutes.
Part 1 comes first and cannot be revisited. Work those questions carefully by hand, check each one, and then move on to the calculator part with most of the 115 minutes still available.
Scoring the Test
Mathematical Reasoning is scored on a scale of 100 to 200. A score of 145 or higher passes the subject; you must reach 145 on all four subjects to earn the credential. Higher scores show readiness for college coursework.
