Exam Overview
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world's most widely recognized English language proficiency tests. Thousands of universities, employers, professional bodies, and immigration authorities accept it, including organizations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. A strong IELTS score demonstrates that you can communicate effectively in English, opening doors to education and career advancement around the world.
Two Test Types
IELTS is offered in two versions. Both share the same Listening and Speaking tests; the Reading and Writing tests differ in content and purpose. Check which version your university, employer, or visa program requires before you book.

For people who plan to work, train, or migrate to an English-
professional registration. Reading uses longer academic
speaking country. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts,
passages, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a chart,

graph, table, diagram, process, or map.
Exam Pattern and Structure
The Listening, Reading, and Writing tests are taken in one sitting, in that order, with no breaks between them. The Speaking test is a separate face-to-face interview with a certified examiner, held on the same day or within seven days before or after the other modules.

Scoring and Evaluation
Each module receives a band score from 0 to 9, reported in whole or half bands (for example, 6.5 or 7.0). Listening and Reading each contain 40 questions worth one mark apiece, and the raw mark is converted to a band. Writing and Speaking are scored by certified examiners against four equally weighted criteria. In Writing, Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1.
Your Overall Band Score is the average of the four module scores, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
Example: 6.5 + 6.5 + 5.0 + 7.0 = 25.0; 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.25, which rounds up to an Overall Band Score of 6.5.
There is no pass or fail score. Each university, employer, and immigration authority sets its own requirement, often as an overall band plus a minimum in each module. Many universities ask for an overall band of 6.5 or 7.0, while many work and migration programs require 6.0 or above. Check the exact requirement of every organization you apply to.
Task 2: essay of at least 250 words (about 40 minutes)
Task 1: report or letter of at least 150 words (about 20 minutes)
