Literacy and English language arts together make up more than a third of the test. Mathematics gets the most time per question because its framework includes college-level algebra and statistics as well as elementary mathematics.
How the Test Is Scored
Each testlet is scored on its own, and your overall score is the sum of your scaled testlet scores. You pass when the overall score reaches at least 240 and you have met the minimum score, or floor, on every testlet. For a multiple-choice testlet the floor is answering about a quarter of the questions correctly. There is no separate passing score for each testlet, so a strong testlet can make up for a weaker one, as long as no testlet falls below its floor.
Only correct answers count. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
Banking and Retakes
- Testlet scores are banked: if you retake a testlet, your best attempt counts.
- If you do not pass, you retake only the testlets you choose, not the whole test.
- Once every testlet is above its floor, retake the testlets where you can gain the most points.
- Each testlet costs $25, so a retake of one testlet costs far less than a full retake.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Classroom scenarios: a teacher's goal, a student's work or an assessment result, followed by the best next instructional step
- Student work samples: invented spellings, oral reading errors, writing drafts, math solutions with a misconception
- English learner profiles with a proficiency level and a language task to plan for
- Mathematics computation and reasoning, including algebra, probability and statistics problems
- Science investigation designs, data tables and safety decisions
- Primary-source excerpts, maps and data in social studies
- Arts, physical education and health scenarios about skill cues, fitness principles and health decisions
