Using Context Clues
Context clues are hints within the text that help readers determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Spanish texts provide several types of context clues that skilled readers learn to recognize and utilize.
Definition clues occur when the author directly defines a term, often using phrases like "es decir" (that is to say), "o sea" (in other words), or "se define como" (is defined as). Example clues provide instances that illustrate the word's meaning, introduced by "como" (such as), "por ejemplo" (for example), or "incluyendo" (including).
Synonym clues present words or phrases with similar meanings near the unfamiliar term. Antonym clues provide contrasting words, often signaled by "pero" (but), "sin embargo" (however), or "a diferencia de" (unlike). General context clues require readers to use the overall meaning of surrounding sentences to infer word meaning.
Cognates and False Cognates
Cognates are words that share similar spelling and meaning across languages due to common linguistic origins. Spanish and English share thousands of cognates, making them valuable tools for vocabulary comprehension. Examples include "información" (information), "importante" (important), "educación" (education), and "comunicar" (communicate).
However, false cognates (falsos amigos) appear similar but have different meanings. Common false cognates include "actualmente" (currently, not actually), "embarazada" (pregnant, not embarrassed), "realizar" (to carry out, not to realize), "asistir" (to attend, not to assist), "éxito" (success, not exit), and "sensible" (sensitive, not sensible). Always verify meaning through context rather than assuming cognate equivalence.
Word Formation Patterns
Understanding Spanish word formation helps readers decode unfamiliar vocabulary. Prefixes modify word meaning: "des-" indicates negation or reversal (deshacer = undo), "re-" suggests repetition (releer = reread), "pre-" indicates before (predecir = predict), and "in-/im-" often negates (imposible = impossible).
Suffixes indicate grammatical function or modify meaning: "-mente" forms adverbs (rápidamente = quickly), "-ción/-sión" forms nouns (educación = education), "-oso/-osa" forms adjectives meaning "full of" (estudioso = studious), and "-izar" forms verbs (organizar = organize).
Root words often reveal core meaning. The root "escrib-" relates to writing (escribir, escritor, escrito), "educ-" relates to education (educar, educador, educativo), and "enseñ-" relates to teaching (enseñar, enseñanza, enseñante).
Academic and Professional Vocabulary
The ILTS exam emphasizes vocabulary related to educational contexts.
Figurative Language
Spanish texts employ figurative language that requires interpretation beyond literal meaning. Metaphors (metáforas) make direct comparisons: "El conocimiento es poder" (Knowledge is power). Similes (símiles) use "como" for comparison: "El estudiante absorbe información como una esponja" (The student absorbs information like a sponge).
Idioms (modismos) are expressions whose meaning cannot be determined from individual words: "meter la pata" (to make a mistake, literally "to put in the leg"), "tomar el pelo" (to tease/joke, literally "to take the hair"), and "estar en las nubes" (to daydream, literally "to be in the clouds"). Understanding common Spanish idioms is essential for accurate comprehension.
