Introduction to the Reading Section
The Reading section of the Iowa Assessment Level 9 measures a third-grade student's ability to read and comprehend written text. Students encounter both literary passages (stories, poems, drama) and informational passages (articles, directions, explanations). Questions assess literal comprehension, inferential understanding, vocabulary in context, text structure recognition, and the ability to analyze author's purpose and craft.
This section evaluates whether students can identify main ideas, locate supporting details, draw conclusions, make predictions, compare and contrast information, understand sequence, recognize cause-and-effect relationships, and interpret vocabulary based on context clues.
