Exam Overview
Themassage&Bodyworklicensingexamination
The Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) is developed and administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). It is an entry-level licensure examination built on a nationwide job task analysis of massage therapy practice, and it is used for licensure in most of the jurisdictions that regulate massage therapy, including the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. For most candidates, passing the MBLEx is the last major step before applying for a state license.
Exam Pattern
The MBLEx is a computer-based test of 100 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer options. You have 110 minutes to answer them within a two-hour appointment that also includes a security agreement and a short survey. There are no scheduled breaks; an unscheduled break is taken on your own time while the exam clock keeps running. The exam is offered in English and Spanish and is given only at Pearson VUE test centers; it is not available online. Calculators are not permitted.
The Seven Content Areas
FSMTB's content outline divides the exam into seven areas. Client Assessment, Reassessment, and Treatment Planning carries the most weight, and the three practice-focused areas (assessment, ethics, and professional practice) together make up nearly half of the exam.

Anatomy & Physiology (11%)
Structure and function of each body system, including the sensory system; tissue injury and repair; concepts of energetic anatomy
Kinesiology (12%)
Skeletal muscle components and contractions; proprioceptors; muscle locations, attachments, and actions; joint structure and function; active, passive, and resisted range of motion

Scoring and Results
The MBLEx is criterion-referenced: the passing standard reflects the minimum competence expected of an entry-level massage therapist, so your result depends only on your own performance, never on how other candidates do. Results are reported as pass or fail. If you pass, a congratulatory message appears on screen when you finish. If you do not pass, you receive a diagnostic report showing your performance in each content area, which tells you where to focus before retesting. FSMTB sends official results only to the state licensing board you designate on your application; results are not posted online. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
The exam has 100 four-option questions in 110 minutes, a pace of about 1 minute 6 seconds per question. With no scheduled break, practice sitting through a full timed practice test so the length feels familiar on test day.

Why the MBLEx Matters

Eligibility and Registration
You apply to FSMTB online and choose the state board that should receive your result. Eligibility is based on the requirements of that board, which usually include completing an approved massage therapy education program; some boards allow students to test near the end of their program. Once your application is approved, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT), generally within about five business days, and you schedule your appointment with Pearson VUE within the 120-day ATT window. Testing accommodations under the ADA are requested with your application at no additional charge. On test day, arrive at least 30 minutes early and bring two forms of identification: a government-issued primary ID with your photo and signature, and a secondary ID with your signature. Your name must match exactly on your application, your ATT, and both IDs.
