Exam Overview
What is the NBPTS National Board Certification?
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification is one of the most prestigious credentials an educator can earn in the United States. It is a voluntary, advanced teaching certification that recognizes teachers who meet high standards of excellence in classroom practice, professional knowledge, and student impact.
This certification is widely respected and demonstrates a teacher’s commitment to professional growth, effective teaching, and student success. Teachers who achieve National Board Certification often earn higher salaries, gain leadership opportunities, and improve their instructional effectiveness.

Exam Components and Breakdown
The National Board Certification Exam consists of four key components:
Component 1: Content Knowledge (Computer-Based Assessment)
- 45 selected-response items, each with four options and one correct answer; 40 are scored and 5 are field-test items.
- Three 30-minute constructed-response exercises ask you to analyze a classroom situation, student data or work samples and describe an appropriate instructional response.
- Within Component 1, the selected-response section and the three constructed responses each carry half of the weight.
| Segment | Time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Non-disclosure agreement and tutorial | 20 min | Accept the agreement and learn the testing interface |
| Selected-response items | 60 min | 45 four-option questions across the full age range and range of disabilities |
| Scheduled break | 10 min | The clock runs; extra break time is taken from the next exercise |
| Constructed-response exercise 1 | 30 min | Written response to a classroom scenario, data or student work |
| Constructed-response exercise 2 | 30 min | Separate clock; unused time does not carry over |
| Constructed-response exercise 3 | 30 min | Separate clock; unused time does not carry over |
Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction (Portfolio Submission)
- Candidates submit student work samples that show how they adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Teachers reflect on individualized learning plans and instructional decisions.
Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment (Video Portfolio Submission)
- Candidates submit video recordings of classroom teaching.
- Demonstrates engagement strategies, student interaction, and instructional effectiveness.
Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner (Portfolio Submission)
- Focuses on assessment-driven instruction and professional growth.
- Includes student assessments, data analysis, and professional learning reflections.
Scoring and Passing Criteria
- Each constructed-response exercise and each portfolio component is scored on a 12-point rubric scale from 0.75 to 4.25; the selected-response section is converted to the same scale.
- Each score is multiplied by its weight and the weighted scores are added. You need a total of at least 110, which works out to an average of about 2.63 across the weighted parts.
- There is no minimum score on any single component, so a strong score on one part can offset a weaker one.
- Scores are banked automatically. You may retake a component up to two times within your five-year window, and your highest score counts.
