Exam Overview
Thencctnationalcertifiedphlebotomytechnician(Ncpt)Exam
The NCPT exam is the phlebotomy certification exam of the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). It measures the knowledge an entry-level phlebotomy technician needs to collect, handle, and deliver specimens safely and accurately, and to practice within legal and ethical limits. Its content comes from NCCT's detailed test plan, which is built from a job analysis of practicing phlebotomy technicians. Passing earns the National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) credential, which many employers prefer or require.
Exam Pattern
The exam contains 125 questions: 100 scored items and 25 unscored pretest items that are being tried out for future exams. Pretest items are mixed in with the scored items and are not identified, so give every question your best effort. You have 3 hours, a little more than a minute per question. About 92% of the items are standard four-option multiple- choice questions with one best answer; the other 8% are alternative items such as drag and drop, multi-select, and hotspot questions.

Anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and common disorders are not tested as separate categories. They are built into questions throughout the exam, for example choosing a vein near the median nerve or recognizing what a test ordered for a bleeding disorder requires.
Eligibility
NCCT offers several routes to eligibility. Candidates apply online and submit the documentation their route requires. California and Louisiana applicants have additional state-specific requirements, including documented venipunctures and capillary punctures.

Scoring
NCCT converts raw scores to a scaled score from 0 to 100, and a scaled score of 70 is required to pass. Scaling keeps results fair across exam versions of slightly different difficulty, so the number of correct answers needed can vary a little from one version to another; 70 is not the same as 70% correct. Only the 100 scored items count, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
