Question 1 · Reading
Wrong-way crashes make up a small share of highway collisions, but they are among the most deadly, because they usually involve head- on impacts at combined speeds far above those that vehicle safety systems are built to absorb. Reviews of these crashes show a consistent profile: most occur between midnight and 5 a.m., most begin when a driver enters a divided highway by an exit ramp, and a large proportion of the drivers involved are impaired. Many of these drivers travel in the lane next to the median, apparently believing they are keeping to the right on a two-way road. That lane is the passing lane of correctly moving traffic, where speeds are highest. A trooper who receives a report of a wrong-way driver should not try to meet the vehicle head-on or park a patrol car in its path. Past incidents show that impaired wrong-way drivers often fail to react to emergency lights, and a patrol car stopped in the travel lane simply
Which of the following best states the main purpose of the bulletin?
Answer: D. To describe the danger posed by wrong-way drivers and the safest way for troopers to respond
The bulletin first explains why wrong-way crashes are so deadly and then sets out the recommended patrol response, so it describes the danger and the safest way to respond. It says signs have reduced the problem without eliminating it, and it specifically warns against blocking the wrong-way vehicle's lane.
Question 2 · Deductive Reasoning and Ordering of Information
Trooper Alvarez arrests a man for criminal mischief at a convenience store. Sergeant Kim, who arrived as backup, searches the man, finds nothing, and turns him over to Alvarez for transport. Alvarez handcuffs the man behind the back, double-locks the handcuffs, and places him in the rear seat of his patrol car without searching him again. He then drives the man to the barracks. Based on the policy, are Trooper Alvarez's actions a violation?
Answer: A. Yes, because the transporting member must search the person even after another member has.
Provision 1 requires the transporting member to search the person "even if the person has already been searched by another member," so Sergeant Kim's search did not relieve Alvarez of that duty. The mileage call in provision 3 applies only to a person of the opposite sex.
Question 3 · Inductivereasoning
Refer to the statements above Question 39. Which conclusion about the collision itself is BEST supported by the statements?
Answer: D. The pickup entered the intersection against a red light. with a roof rack; the plate was not visible. Theft 3 – Saturday, 11:30 p.m., shopping mall lot. Converter taken from a sedan. A shopper saw two men standing near a gray minivan. Theft 4 – The following Tuesday, 2:25 a.m., Exit 14 park-and-ride lot. Converter cut from a pickup; a broken saw blade was left at the scene. At 2:30 a.m. a patrol car saw a white van with a roof rack heading toward the interstate.
The bus driver, stopped at the red light on Carver Street, saw the pickup run that red light, and the sedan driver independently states that the light on Maple Avenue was green, which means Carver traffic faced red. A right turn from eastbound Carver leads south, not north, and no witness links the rear-bumper dent to this crash.
Question 4 · Grammar
Which of the following sentences is punctuated correctly?
Answer: B. The vehicle was unoccupied; however, the engine was still warm.
Two independent clauses joined by "however" need a semicolon before it and a comma after it. "The vehicle was unoccupied, the engine was still warm" is a comma splice, the version with no punctuation before "however" is a run-on, and the version with a comma after "engine" separates the subject from its verb.
Question 5 · Spatialorientation
You are at the intersection of Mill Ave and River Rd, facing north. You drive one block north, turn left, and drive two blocks. You turn right and drive one block, turn right again and drive one block, and then make one more right turn. In which direction are you now facing?
Answer: B. South
The route runs north on Mill Ave to Court St, west on Court St to Hill Ave, north on Hill Ave to Main St, and east on Main St to State Ave. A right turn while heading east points you south, onto southbound State Ave.
Question 6 · Reading
Body-worn cameras are issued to troopers assigned to road patrol, and the rules for their use reflect two goals that sometimes pull in different directions: creating a complete record of encounters between police and the public, and protecting the privacy of people who are not suspects. Troopers must activate the camera before arriving at any call for service and before starting any traffic stop, and they must keep it recording until the encounter has ended. A recording that begins partway through an event is of limited value, because the portion most likely to be disputed, how the encounter started, is missing. The policy recognizes situations in which recording may be paused. A trooper may stop recording while speaking with a confidential informant, when a crime victim asks not to be recorded while describing a sexual assault, or while inside a hospital treatment area where other patients could be filmed. In each case, the trooper must
Which of the following best describes the passage as a whole?
Answer: A. An explanation of camera rules, the reasons for them, and the cameras' limits
The passage sets out when cameras must run and may be paused, explains why, describes supervisory review, and ends with the cameras' limits. It states that written reports are still required, and it mentions neither penalties nor patrol-car cameras.
Question 7 · Policy · Questions121–124
Trooper Grant stops a car for speeding. As the driver hands over her license, Grant realizes that he never activated his BWC. He activates it immediately and completes the stop, issuing a ticket. At the end of his tour, he explains the late activation in his incident report but does not tell a supervisor about it. Based on the policy, are Trooper Grant's actions a violation?
Answer: B. Yes, because he also had to notify a supervisor before the end of his tour.
Grant failed to record the start of a vehicle stop, so provision 4 required two things: documenting the reason in the incident report and notifying a supervisor before the end of the tour. He did only the first; the policy sets no one-hour deadline.
Question 8 · Inductivereasoning
Refer to the statements above Question 139. What is the MOST likely reason the clerk saw the robber leave toward the car wash?
Answer: B. He was heading for a car that was waiting for him behind the car wash.
A running car with a driver had been waiting behind the car wash for about ten minutes, and the robber was seen getting into it there. No statement suggests hiding or a second robbery, and the robber did not return to a vehicle at the pumps.
Question 9 · Grammar
Which of the following sentences is punctuated correctly?
Answer: C. The suspect's car, which had a cracked windshield, was found in a parking garage.
"Which had a cracked windshield" adds nonessential information about a car already identified, so it must be set off by a pair of commas. Omitting both commas, or using only one of the pair, is incorrect.
Question 10 · Spatialorientation
You are at the intersection of Bridge Ave and Chapel St, facing east. You drive one block, turn right, and drive two blocks. You turn left and drive two blocks, turn left again and drive one block, and then make one more left turn. In which direction are you now facing?
Answer: D. West
The route runs east on Chapel St to Union Ave, south on Union Ave to Canal St, east on Canal St to Market Ave, and north on Market Ave to Broad St. A left turn while heading north points you west, the direction Broad St allows.
