Eligibility Requirements
To sit for the examination, a candidate must meet all of the following when applying:
- Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States, or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country.
- Hold a bachelor's or higher degree in nursing.
- Have practiced the equivalent of 2 years full-time as a registered nurse.
- Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in nursing professional development within the last 3 years.
- Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in nursing professional development within the last 3 years.
Fees and Scheduling
| Candidate | Initial certification | Renewal |
|---|---|---|
| American Nurses Association member | $295 | $250 |
| Non-member | $395 | $350 |
Fees include a non-refundable administrative fee. After the application is approved, ANCC issues an Authorization to Test (ATT), and the candidate schedules an appointment with Prometric within the testing window stated on the ATT. Fees and policies are set by ANCC and can change, so confirm current details on ANCC's website before applying.
Scoring, Results, and Retesting
- Raw scores on the 125 scored items are converted to a scaled score from 0 to 500; 350 is the passing standard. Scaling keeps the standard equal across exam forms of slightly different difficulty.
- Candidates who do not pass receive a diagnostic report showing performance by content domain, which is the best guide to re-study.
- A candidate who does not pass may retest after 60 days from the last test date, and may take the exam no more than 3 times in any 12-month period, with a new application and fee.
Maintaining the Credential
NPD-BC certification is valid for 5 years. Renewal requires continuing education in the specialty plus additional professional development activities chosen from ANCC's renewal categories (such as academic credits, presentations, publications, preceptor hours, or professional service), or retaking the examination. Track contact hours and activities throughout the cycle rather than at the end.
