Question 1 · Literacy
Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage?
Answer: B. Tree canopy keeps city blocks cooler, but the benefit depends on fair planting and steady care of young trees.
The passage explains how canopy cools neighborhoods, shows that canopy is unevenly spread, and argues that planting must be paired with care, so the key covers all four paragraphs. The statement about older adults and outdoor workers is a supporting detail from paragraph 3, not the idea that ties the passage together.
Question 2 · Literacy
Before the tournament, the coach asked the team captains to pare the long list of drills down to the three that mattered most. As used in the sentence, the word pare means to
Answer: A. trim or reduce
The phrase "down to the three that mattered most" shows that the captains are cutting the list, so pare means to trim or reduce. "Arrange in twos" is the meaning of the homonym pair, which sounds the same but is spelled differently.
Question 3 · Language Arts
Which sentence should be removed because it does not support the main idea of the newsletter?
Answer: A. Sentence 5
The newsletter reports on the class field trip, and sentence 5 about a new cafeteria pasta dish has nothing to do with it. Sentence 2 adds only a minor detail about travel time, but it still relates to the trip.
Question 4 · Numeracy
Priya's weekly goal is to read for 12 hours. How many more minutes must she read over the weekend to meet her goal?
Answer: A. 15 minutes
Twelve hours is 12 × 60 = 720 minutes, and she has read 705 minutes, so she needs 720 − 705 = 15 more minutes. The answer 495 comes from treating 12 hours as 1,200 minutes, and 180 comes from leaving Friday's 165 minutes out of the total.
Question 5 · Instruction
A third-grade group finishes reading a short story, but when the teaching assistant asks the students to retell it, most of them cannot recall the main events in order. The teacher's plan includes a story map. Which during- reading change would BEST help the group next time?
Answer: A. Stop at planned points so students retell what happened and add it to the story map
Stopping to summarize and record events on the story map while reading helps students monitor comprehension and keep events in sequence, which is exactly where the retelling broke down. Rereading without a purpose, copying sentences or a vocabulary quiz do not teach the students to track the plot as they read.
Question 6 · Literacy
Because the directions on the worksheet were unclear, several students misinterpreted the assignment and wrote summaries instead of arguments. Based on its word parts and the context of the sentence, the word misinterpreted most nearly means
Answer: C. understood incorrectly
The prefix mis- means wrongly or badly, and interpret means to understand or explain, so misinterpreted means understood incorrectly. The context confirms it: the students wrote the wrong kind of paper. Read again carefully is tempting because the prefix re- is easy to confuse with mis-, but nothing in the sentence suggests rereading.
Question 7 · Literacy
Which word is an antonym of stifle as it is used in paragraph 4?
Answer: A. encourage
In paragraph 4, stifle means to hold back or smother, since critics fear uniforms would limit students' self-expression; the opposite is encourage. Restrict and silence are tempting because they are related to stifle, but they are synonyms, not antonyms, and question is unrelated in meaning.
Question 8 · Language Arts
Which sentence is least relevant to the purpose of the letter and should be removed?
Answer: D. Sentence 4
The letter gives families information about Family Reading Night, and the color of the art room has nothing to do with the event. Sentence 7 may look like a side comment, but it gives families a reason to attend by explaining the value of reading together.
Question 9 · Numeracy
MOSAIC TILE PATTERN Figure 1 2 3 4 Tiles 5 9 13 17 Students in art class build a mosaic pattern. The table shows how many tiles are in each figure. If the pattern continues, how many tiles will be in Figure 20?
Answer: C. 81
The number of tiles increases by 4 each time and Figure 1 has 5 tiles, so the rule is 4n + 1; Figure 20 has 4 × 20 + 1 = 81 tiles. The answer 80 forgets the extra tile, and 100 multiplies the first figure's 5 tiles by 20.
Question 10 · Instruction
A fourth grader has finished a first draft of a personal narrative and asks the teaching assistant, "Can you just fix it so it's good?" The class is working on the revising stage. What is the BEST response?
Answer: A. Ask him where a reader might want more detail and have him add it himself.
Revising is about content and clarity, and guiding questions help the student improve his own writing while keeping ownership of it. Rewriting the paragraphs does the work for him, and fixing spelling and punctuation belongs to editing, a later stage than the one the class is working on.
