Exam Overview
The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is a globally recognized credential that validates a project manager's ability to lead teams and achieve project objectives across predictive, agile, and hybrid environments. Employers worldwide prefer or require it for project management roles, which makes it a key step for advancing in the field.
Exam Pattern
The exam contains 180 questions: 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest questions that PMI is evaluating for future use. Pretest questions are mixed in with scored questions and look exactly like them, so treat every question as if it counts. You have 240 minutes, with two scheduled 10-minute breaks that divide the exam into three sections. The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE test centers or through online proctoring.
Most questions describe a project situation and ask for the best action. Question formats include:

The Three Exam Domains
The current PMP Examination Content Outline organizes the exam into three domains with 26 tasks in all. Compared with the previous outline, the Business Environment domain has grown substantially, and the exam now includes artificial intelligence, sustainability, and value delivery in project-based scenarios.

Questions from every domain can be set in any environment, so study agile and hybrid practices (Section 14) alongside the predictive processes in Sections 4 through 13.
Scoring and Results
PMI does not publish a fixed passing score or percentage. The passing standard is set through psychometric analysis by subject matter experts, and only the 170 scored questions count toward your result. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so answer every question. You receive an overall pass or fail result, plus a performance rating for each domain:
