Question 1 · Art Making: General
Answer: A. Implied texture created by visual simulation
The roughness exists only as an illusion on a smooth surface, which is implied (simulated) texture. Actual or tactile texture would require the surface itself to change, as with impasto or scratched sgraffito, and abstract texture stylizes a texture into pattern rather than imitating it.
Question 2 · Materials in Historical Context
Answer: D. 2H graphite
H grades contain more clay and less graphite, so they make hard, light lines that resist smudging and erase easily, which suits construction lines. The B grades get softer and darker as the number rises, so 6B and 4B deposit a lot of graphite that smears and is hard to erase. Even a B pencil is softer than needed for light layout lines.
Question 3 · Media and Processes
Answer: A. The image is underexposed with clipped shadows
A histogram plots tones from black on the left to white on the right, so data crowded on the left with a spike at the edge means many pixels are pure black and shadow detail is lost. Blown highlights would pile against the right edge instead, and a luminance histogram does not show a color cast.
Question 4 · Media and Processes
Answer: A. To remove oxides and leftover flux
Pickle, a mild acid solution, dissolves the surface oxides and glassy flux residue left by soldering so the piece can be finished. Flux, not pickle, helps solder flow, and liver of sulfur, not pickle, is used to create a dark patina on silver.
Question 5 · Art Beyond the Western Tradition
Answer: A. record how changing light alters color and form
Monet's series paintings treat the motif as a constant so that the real subject becomes shifting light and atmosphere, a central Impressionist concern. Conveying religious symbolism misreads the series, since Monet was interested in optical sensation rather than the cathedral's sacred meaning.
Question 6 · Art Making: General
Answer: C. Tenebrism
Tenebrism is an intensified chiaroscuro in which most of the composition is in dark shadow and a few forms are spotlit, as in Caravaggio. Sfumato produces soft, gradual transitions, the opposite of Caravaggio's abrupt contrasts, and impasto refers to thick paint texture, not lighting.
Question 7 · Materials in Historical Context
Answer: C. Workable fixative
Workable fixative lightly binds loose particles while leaving enough tooth for more layers, and it can be partly erased through. Final fixative seals the surface more heavily, so it resists further work. Retouch varnish and acrylic medium are painting products that would saturate and darken charcoal and fill the paper's tooth.
Question 8 · Media and Processes
Answer: D. As a vector graphic made of paths
Vector graphics are defined mathematically by paths and points, so they scale to any size without pixelation. A 300 ppi raster image, a high-quality JPEG, and a layered PSD are all pixel-based, so enlarging them to billboard size would show pixelation or softness.
Question 9 · Media and Processes
Answer: D. Champlevé
In champlevé, enamel fills depressions cut into the base metal itself. Cloisonné instead uses thin wires (cloisons) soldered or set on the surface to form cells, plique-à-jour leaves the enamel unbacked like stained glass, and repoussé is a hammered relief metal technique, not enameling.
Question 10 · Art Beyond the Western Tradition
Answer: D. gave ordinary toil the dignity of grand art
Courbet's Realism insisted that contemporary working people deserved the monumental treatment academies reserved for heroic and historical subjects, a social and artistic challenge. Idealizing peasants as mythological heroes is the opposite of what Courbet did: he showed his laborers without heroizing them.
