The Five Content Categories
Content Categories and Weights
| Category | Approximate Questions | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| I Child Development and Learning | 35 | 28% |
| II Child Observation, Documentation, and Assessment | 23 | 18% |
| III Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practice | 30 | 24% |
| IV Professionalism, Family-Teacher Partnerships, and Community Connections | 16 | 13% |
| V Knowledge, Application, and Integration of Academic Content in the Curriculum | 21 | 17% |
Child development and developmentally appropriate practice together account for just over half of the score. Assessment is the third-largest category, so knowing which observation method fits which purpose is worth real study time.
How the Test Is Scored
Your raw score is the number of scored questions you answer correctly. It is converted to a scaled score, and each state sets its own passing score. Look up your state's requirement on the ETS Passing Scores by State page before you test. The test may include questions that do not count toward your score, but they are not marked, so treat every question as if it counts.
There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
Question Formats
- Most questions ask for one best answer from four choices.
- Some questions ask you to select two answers, or three answers from five choices. You must select every correct choice and only the correct choices to earn credit, and the question tells you how many to choose.
- The practice tests in this guide use the single-best-answer format so that each question can be scored and explained cleanly. Read every multi-answer question on test day slowly, and test each choice on its own against the scenario.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Classroom scenarios in infant, toddler, preschool, pre-K and kindergarten settings, followed by the most appropriate, best or first teacher action
- A child's behavior or words, with a question about the developmental stage, theory or milestone it shows
- Short observation records and assessment results to interpret
- Family conferences, home visits and team meetings, including IFSP and IEP situations
- Ethical and legal situations: confidentiality, mandated reporting, rights of children with disabilities and records
- Early literacy and mathematics activities matched to a specific skill
