Exam Overview
Praxiselementaryeducation:Multiplesubjects(5001)
The Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test is developed and administered by ETS as part of the Praxis Series of teacher licensure tests. It assesses the content knowledge a beginning elementary teacher needs across reading and language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. State education agencies use the results, together with coursework and other requirements, to make certification decisions.
Exam Pattern
The 5001 test contains 245 questions in four separately timed subtests, for a total testing time of 4 hours 35 minutes. Questions are selected-response: most are single-selection multiple-choice questions with four answer choices; some ask you to select more than one answer, and the Mathematics subtest also includes numeric-entry questions, where you type your answer in a box. An on-screen scientific calculator is provided for the Mathematics and Science subtests.
| Subtest | Questions | Time | QuestionFormats |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReadingandLanguageArts(5002) | 80 | 90min | Selected -response |
| Mathematics(5003) | 50 | 65min | Selected -response and numeric-entry; on-screen |

Scoring
Each subtest is scored separately and reported on a scale of 100 to 200. Your raw score is the number of questions answered correctly; there is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question. Raw scores are converted to scaled scores so that results are comparable across different editions of the test.
Passing scores are set by each state
Each state or licensing agency sets its own qualifying score for each subtest, commonly in the mid- to high-150s. Confirm your state's current requirement on the ETS Praxis website before you register.
Each subtest must be passed on its own
A high score on one subtest does not make up for a low score on another. If you pass some subtests and not others, you retake only the subtests you did not pass.
Retakes
You may retake a subtest after a waiting period of 28 days from your previous attempt, registering and paying for that subtest again.
