Exam Overview
The 5901 bundle is made up of three separately timed subtests delivered in one computer-based appointment. You can test at a test center or at home with online proctoring.
| Subtest | Questions | Time | Content categories (approx. share) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics (5903) | about 50 | 65 minutes | Numbers and Operations 40% · Algebraic Thinking 30% · Geometry and Measurement, Data, Statistics, and Probability 30% |
| Social Studies (5904) | 60 | 60 minutes | U.S. History, Government, and Citizenship 45% · Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology 30% · World History and Economics 25% |
| Science (5905) | 55 | 60 minutes | Earth Science 33% · Life Science 33% · Physical Science 33% |
| Total | about 165 | 3 hours 5 minutes | Some questions are pretest items that do not count toward your score |
Question Formats
Single answer
Four choices with oval buttons; select the one best answer. This is the most common format on all three subtests.
Multiple selection
Square boxes. Some items tell you how many answers to choose (for example, TWO); others say “Select all that apply.” You must choose every correct option to get credit.
Numeric entry (Math)
Type a number in a box, or a fraction in two boxes. Equivalent values such as 2.5 and 2.50 are accepted; round only when the question tells you to.
Calculator
An on-screen scientific calculator is available during the Mathematics subtest. Practice with a basic scientific calculator before test day, avoid rounding in the middle of a problem, and remember that many items are faster to solve mentally or by estimation than by keying every number.
Scoring
How Scores Work
- Each subtest is reported as its own scaled score on a 100–200 scale.
- Each state (or licensing agency) sets its own passing score for each subtest, so check the requirement for the state where you want to teach.
- There is no penalty for wrong answers. Answer every question.
- If you pass some subtests and not others, you generally retake only the subtest(s) you still need.
