The Three Content Categories
Content Categories, Timing and Weights
| Category | Time | About How Many Questions | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| I Numbers and Operations | 40 minutes | 28 | 42% |
| II Algebraic Thinking | 30 minutes | 20 | 29% |
| III Geometry, Measurement, and Data | 30 minutes | 20 | 29% |
Because each category has its own clock, time left over in one category does not carry over to the next. Plan on about 1 minute 25 seconds per question in Category I and 1 minute 30 seconds per question in Categories II and III.
Tasks of Teaching Mathematics
About 10 to 15 percent of the questions set the mathematics inside a teaching task. You might see a student's solution and be asked what misconception it shows, compare two students' strategies, choose the counterexample that disproves a student's claim, or pick the representation that best fits a lesson goal. These questions are spread across all three categories. Section 4 of this guide teaches them directly, and every practice test includes them.
Question Types
The practice tests in this guide print every question with four choices so that they can be checked quickly. On many of them, work the problem to a number before you look at the choices, as you would for a numeric-entry question on the real test.
How the Test Is Scored
Your raw score is the number of scored questions you answer correctly. It is converted to a scaled score. Some questions are being tried out for future use and do not count, but they are not marked, so treat every question as if it counts. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
Each state that uses test 8003 sets its own passing score. The multistate recommended passing score is 152. Check the requirement for your state on the Praxis website before you test.
Praxis Steps
Where a state has adopted Praxis Steps, you can take the full test in one sitting or take and retake one content category at a time. Check your state's requirements to see whether Steps are allowed for you.
