Question 1 · English and Language Usage
Answer: D. Carrying on an inherited task means acting without certainty and letting time judge the results.
The speaker admits “I do not know the cuts” but makes them “anyway” and waits for spring “to tell me which were wrong,” so the poem centers on “carrying on an inherited task” without certainty and letting time judge. The bleak imagery of lines 5–7 tempts readers toward “nature’s indifference makes human labor pointless,” but the turn at “Still” and the speaker’s decision to act contradict that reading.
Question 2 · English and Language Usage
Answer: B. Before the project, the lot was strewn with debris, and most residents avoided it.
A letter to a city council calls for a formal, specific register: “strewn with debris” replaces the vague slang “super gross,” and “most residents avoided it” drops the conversational “Honestly.” The option with “Before the project” and “grossness” fixes the opening but keeps informal diction, so it does not suit the audience.
Question 3 · Mathematics
Answer: A. 60 m³
The side view is a trapezoid with area ½(1 + 2)(10) = 15 m², and multiplying by the 4 m width gives 60 m³ (equivalently, the average depth of 1.5 m × 10 × 4). Using the 2 m maximum depth throughout gives 80 m³; using the 1 m minimum gives 40 m³; adding the depths without halving gives 120 m³.
Question 4 · Citizenship and Social Science
| Month | J | F | M | A | M | J | J | A | S | O | N | D |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avg. temp. (°C) | 10 | 11 | 13 | 15 | 19 | 23 | 26 | 26 | 23 | 18 | 14 | 11 |
| Precip. (mm) | 90 | 80 | 70 | 60 | 30 | 10 | 2 | 5 | 20 | 70 | 110 | 100 |
Answer: C. Mediterranean climate on the west side of a Northern Hemisphere continent
Warmest months in July and August place the station in the Northern Hemisphere, and the pattern of hot, nearly rainless summers with mild, wet winters defines a Mediterranean climate, found on west coasts near 30°–40° latitude. A humid subtropical climate also has hot summers, but its summers are wet, not dry.
Question 5 · Science
Answer: A. 3.0 m/s²
Acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time = (22 − 4) ÷ 6 = 18 ÷ 6 = 3.0 m/s². Dividing the final speed alone by the time gives 3.7 m/s², which ignores the initial speed. Adding the speeds gives 26 ÷ 6 ≈ 4.3 m/s², and multiplying the change by the time gives 108, which confuses acceleration with a product of velocity and time.
Question 6 · English and Language Usage
Answer: C. Both portray the work through its traces and effects rather than by showing the work itself.
Neither poem shows the hospital ward or the looms; the mother’s coat “still holding the hospital’s cold” and the grandfather’s scarred hands present work through “its traces and effects,” as does the dye-colored river. Poem 2’s injuries may suggest criticism of employers, but no employer appears in either poem.
Question 7 · English and Language Usage
Answer: A. inform families about the program’s origins, operation, and results
The draft reports how the program began, how it runs, and what it has achieved for a family audience, so its purpose is to “inform families about the program’s origins, operation, and results.” Composting appears only as a future hope in sentence 9, and the newsletter addresses families, not the principal.
Question 8 · Mathematics
Answer: B. About 141 minutes
V = πr²h = π(5)²(12) ≈ 942.5 ft³, which is 942.5 × 7.48 ≈ 7,050 gallons; 7,050 ÷ 50 ≈ 141 minutes . About 19 minutes divides cubic feet by the gallon rate without converting; about 45 minutes omits π; about 564 minutes uses the 10 ft diameter as the radius.
Question 9 · Citizenship and Social Science
Answer: B. 8:00 p.m.
The places are 75° + 45° = 120° apart because they lie on opposite sides of the prime meridian; 120° ÷ 15° = 8 hours, and places to the east are later, so 12:00 + 8 = 8:00 p.m. Subtracting the longitudes (75° − 45° = 30°) gives 2 hours and the incorrect 2:00 p.m.
Question 10 · Science
Answer: A. 58.8 J
The total mechanical energy equals the starting potential energy, mgh = 2.0 × 9.8 × 5.0 = 98.0 J. At 2.0 m the remaining potential energy is 2.0 × 9.8 × 2.0 = 39.2 J, so the kinetic energy is 98.0 − 39.2 = 58.8 J (equivalently, mg × 3.0 m of fall). The value 39.2 J is the potential energy left at that height, and 98.0 J is the kinetic energy only at the instant before the ball reaches the floor.
