Exam Overview
The SAT is a standardized college admission test used by colleges and universities across the United States and around the world. Developed and administered by the College Board, a nonprofit organization, it measures the reading, writing, and math skills that are essential for success in college and career. The test is given digitally in the College Board's Bluebook testing app, and it is shorter than the paper test it replaced.
Exam Pattern and Structure
The SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing and Math. Each section is divided into two equal-length modules, and there is a 10-minute break between the two sections. Within each module you can move back and forth among questions, flag questions to return to, and change answers until time runs out. There is no essay.

How the Adaptive Design Works
The digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. The first module of each section contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Your performance on that module determines whether the second module is somewhat easier or somewhat harder. The scoring accounts for the difficulty of the questions you receive, so the best strategy is simply to answer every question as accurately as you can.

Scoring and Benchmarks
You receive a total score from 400 to 1600, which is the sum of two section scores: Reading and Writing (200–800) and Math (200–800). There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question. There is no passing or failing score; each college decides how it uses SAT scores. Your score report also compares each section score with the College Board's college readiness benchmark, the score that indicates a strong likelihood of success in first-year college courses.

Scores are usually available online within a few weeks of test day. Your score report also shows your performance in each content domain, which tells you exactly which skills to focus on if you plan to test again. Many colleges consider your highest section scores across test dates, so check each college's score policy.

Why the SAT Matters

Registering and Test Day
Register for a weekend test through your College Board account, or take the SAT at school if your school offers SAT School Day. Before test day, install Bluebook on the device you will use (a personal or school-issued laptop or tablet that meets the requirements), complete the test preview, and download your admission ticket. On test day, bring your charged device and a charger, your admission ticket, an acceptable photo ID, pencils for scratch work, and an approved calculator if you prefer a handheld one.
