Exam Overview
The Selection Instrument for Flight Training (SIFT) is the U.S. Army's flight aptitude test and a required step toward becoming an Army aviator. It evaluates your aptitude for aviation training across perceptual speed, spatial reasoning, reading, mathematics, mechanical understanding, and aviation knowledge, and it is designed to predict how well you will perform in the rigorous environment of Army flight training.
Why the SIFT Matters
The SIFT acts as a comprehensive filter, ensuring that candidates selected for Army aviation training have the essential skills and knowledge to succeed. It measures more than what you know today: it assesses your ability to grasp complex concepts and adapt quickly to new learning, qualities every successful Army aviator needs. A strong score demonstrates your readiness to meet the high standards of Army aviation and makes you a more competitive applicant.
Exam Pattern and Structure
The SIFT is a computer-based test delivered online, with seven subtests. Two of them, Math Skills and Mechanical Comprehension, are computer-adaptive: question difficulty adjusts to your performance, so the number of questions varies from one candidate to the next.

The full session, including check-in and setup, can take up to three hours, although many candidates finish in about two. Be prepared for small variations in timing across sections.
The Perceptual Subtests
Three subtests measure visual speed and spatial skill rather than learned content. They are tightly timed, so practice builds both accuracy and pace.

rapid recognition.
Tests your ability to visualize three-dimensional scenarios and interpret aircraft positions and angles. Practice perspective changes, spatial orientation, and mental rotation by visualizing objects from different viewpoints.
Scoring and Passing Requirements
The SIFT is scored on a scale of 20 to 80, with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10. The minimum passing score is 40, but a higher score significantly strengthens your competitiveness as a candidate. The overall score is compensatory: strong performance on one subtest can offset weaker performance on another.

The SIFT allows only two lifetime attempts, and your first passing score becomes your permanent score. Prepare thoroughly before your first attempt so that score is as strong as possible.
Scheduling the Test
The SIFT is given in a secure, proctored environment at authorized Army education centers and testing facilities across the United States. Current Soldiers can schedule through their installation education center; civilians interested in Army aviation should contact an Army recruiter to confirm eligibility and arrange testing.
The SIFT and Your Aviation Career
Passing the SIFT is a critical milestone for aspiring Army aviators. The exam tests foundational skills and reflects your readiness for the challenging path ahead, and a high score increases your chances of selection for flight training. This guide gives you the knowledge and strategies to approach each subtest with confidence and earn a competitive score.
