Determining Word Meaning
Determining word meaning is a core reading skill tested throughout the STAAR EOC English exams. Students must identify the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues, word structure, and reference materials.
Context Clues
Context clues are hints within surrounding text that help readers determine word meaning. Skilled readers use these clues automatically, but deliberate practice strengthens this ability.
Types of Context Clues
Definition Clues The author directly defines the word within the sentence or nearby text. Signal phrases include "which means," "that is," "in other words," and "defined as."
The word "artifact" is directly defined after the comma.
Synonym Clues The author uses a word with similar meaning near the unfamiliar word. The synonym may appear in the same sentence or in adjacent sentences.
"Careful attention to every detail" functions as a synonym for "meticulous."
Antonym Clues The author provides a word or phrase with opposite meaning. Contrast signal words include "but," "however," "unlike," "whereas," "although," and "instead."
"Reserved" and "preferred spending time alone" contrast with "gregarious," indicating gregarious means outgoing or sociable.
Example Clues The author provides examples that illustrate the word's meaning. Signal phrases include "such as," "for example," "including," and "like."
The examples of owls, bats, and raccoons clarify that "nocturnal" relates to nighttime activity.
The situation of losing everything and relying on others for basic needs suggests "destitute" means extremely poor or lacking resources.
