Sections covered on the exam: Number and Operations, Algebraic Reasoning, Geometry and Measurement, Data Analysis, Personal Financial Literacy.
Question 1 · Number and Operations
Answer: C. 40,000 + 5,000 + 300 + 8
45,308 has 4 ten thousands, 5 thousands, 3 hundreds, 0 tens, and 8 ones. The 0 holds the tens place, so the 3 is worth 300 and the 8 is worth 8. In expanded notation, 45,308 = 40,000 + 5,000 + 300 + 8.
Question 2 · Number and Operations
Answer: D. 4 × 7 = 28
The array has 4 rows with 7 chairs in each row. Equal rows can be shown with multiplication. The equation is 4 × 7 = 28.
Question 3 · Number and Operations
Answer: B. 3/4 > 3/8, because fourths are larger than eighths.
Both fractions have 3 parts, so compare the size of the parts. A whole cut into 4 equal parts has larger pieces than a whole cut into 8 equal parts. So 3/4 > 3/8, because fourths are larger than eighths.
Question 4 · Algebraic Reasoning
Answer: D. 3 rows of 8 chairs
Mr. Reed used 4 × 6 = 24 chairs. 5 × 5 = 25, 2 × 10 = 20, and 4 × 7 = 28. Only 3 × 8 = 24, so 3 rows of 8 chairs uses the same number.
Question 5 · Geometry and Measurement
Answer: D. 6 feet
The area of a rectangle is length × width. So 7 × width = 42. Since 7 × 6 = 42, the carpet is 6 feet wide.
Question 6 · Number and Operations
Answer: C. 6,000
The 6 in 46,208 is in the thousands place. Its value is 6 × 1,000. The value of the digit 6 is 6,000.
Question 7 · Number and Operations
Answer: D. 5 × 6 = 30
The array has 5 rows with 6 band members in each row. Equal rows mean multiplication. 5 × 6 = 30 band members.
Question 8 · Number and Operations
Answer: B. 5/6 > 5/8 because sixths are larger parts than eighths.
Both fractions have 5 parts of the same whole. When the whole is cut into 6 parts, each part is larger than when it is cut into 8 parts. So 5/6 > 5/8 because sixths are larger parts than eighths.
Question 9 · Algebraic Reasoning
Answer: D. 3 × 8
6 × 4 = 24. Check each expression: 3 × 8 = 24, 6 + 4 + 4 = 14, 5 × 5 = 25, and 8 × 4 = 32. So 3 × 8 has the same value as 6 × 4.
Question 10 · Geometry and Measurement
Answer: D. 58 square feet
Find the area of each bed: 8 × 5 = 40 square feet and 6 × 3 = 18 square feet. Add the areas: 40 + 18 = 58. The total area is 58 square feet.
