Sections covered on the exam: Literary Genres, Vocabulary, Author's Purpose and Craft, Extended Constructed Response, Writing Process.
Question 1 · Literary Genres
Answer: B. True skill grows through patient effort rather than quick shortcuts.
Nadia's rushed repair in paragraphs 6–7 fails, while her slow quarter turns in paragraph 10 succeed, and in paragraph 12 she realizes looking skilled and becoming skilled are different. The story does not say she should never try things without permission; Mr. Tanaka hands her the wrench and lets her try again. The single word "Good" is a small reward, not the point of the lesson.
Question 2 · Author's Purpose and Craft
Answer: A. picture the dark, quiet city slowly brightening as the bus moves along
Details such as the laundromat "glowing like a lantern" and the river "holding a bruise of light" show early light appearing in a still-sleeping city. "Shuttered shops" are simply closed for the night, and "bruise" describes the color of dawn light, not damage.
Question 3 · Vocabulary
Answer: D. He worries the story will be lost as his grandmother's memory fades.
Tomás first claims the judges "want something big," but after Luz presses him, he admits Abuela has started "losing the ending" and that he could not finish the story himself. His real motive is preserving the story. The claim about the judges is the excuse he gives before the truth comes out.
Question 4 · Extended Constructed Response
Answer: B. Honeybees share the location of food through a remarkable movement known as the waggle dance.
The essay explains how a forager uses the waggle dance to tell other bees the direction and distance of food, so the thesis should name that idea. Sentence 4 is vague and could introduce any topic about bees. The choices about stings and honey mention bees but are not what the rest of the essay explains.
Question 5 · Writing Process
Answer: C. Change county fair to County Fair
Harmon County Fair is the name of a specific event, so every important word in it must be capitalized. Months such as August are always capitalized, and my family is a common noun phrase. The past tense drove matches the rest of the narrative.
Question 6 · Literary Genres
Answer: B. People can misjudge others when they rely on assumptions instead of asking questions.
Mira assumes Desmond quit because he was bored, but in paragraph 13 she learns he left to care for his brothers, and in paragraph 14 she admits she never asked him a single question. Choice D fails because Mira invites Desmond back in paragraph 17, and choice A fails because Mira advances without a partner.
Question 7 · Literary Genres
Answer: C. make the storm seem like a huge figure walking steadily closer
Giving the storm legs that stride and a skirt that drags turns it into a giant figure crossing the land toward the porch, which conveys both its size and its approach. Choice A is wrong because the storm does not move away until stanza 4.
Question 8 · Vocabulary
Answer: C. He continued to wonder what became of the boy and cared about how his life turned out.
Emilio says he never learned the boy's name, so searching for green suitcases suggests he kept thinking about the boy and hoped to know he was all right. Nothing shows he wanted repayment, and he expresses regret about the late train, not about helping the boy ride. The railroad punished him for the delay; it did not assign him to look for children.
Question 9 · Extended Constructed Response
Answer: B. Although it looks nothing like a chimpanzee, the octopus is one of the ocean's most skilled problem solvers.
The essay explains why octopuses are considered problem solvers, so the thesis should name that idea; choice B also links back to the smart animals mentioned in sentence 1. Choices A and C give true facts about octopuses but do not state what the essay will prove. Choice D touches on aquariums, which appear only in paragraph 3.
Question 10 · Writing Process
Answer: B. This year, Tía Rosa finally handed me an apron and said I was ready.
The narrative is told in the past tense, as shown by was only allowed in sentence 2 and smelled in sentence 4, so sentence 3 needs handed and said . Choice A keeps the present-tense verbs. Choices C and D mix tenses or use a verb that does not agree with the subject Tía Rosa .
