Exam Overview
Texescoresubjectsec-6(391)
The Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) are the certification exams overseen by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and delivered by Pearson. The Core Subjects EC-6 (391) exam is required for the Core Subjects: Early Childhood–Grade 6 certificate. It is made up of five subtests, and you must pass every one of them. Candidates for this certificate must also pass the separate Science of Teaching Reading (293) exam.
Exam Pattern
The exam is a computer-administered test (CAT) made up entirely of selected-response (multiple-choice) questions. Many questions present a classroom situation and ask you to identify the skill involved or the most effective instructional choice; others test content knowledge directly. You can take all five subtests in one appointment or take subtests individually.
| Subtest | Questions | Time | ShareofExam |

The total appointment time for the complete exam is 5 hours, which includes a 15-minute computer tutorial and compliance agreement. Each subtest is timed separately.

Scoring and Passing Requirements
Each subtest is scored separately on the TExES scale of 100 to 300, and the passing score is 240 on each subtest. There is no total passing score for the overall exam: results are reported as Passed or Not Passed for each subtest, and you must pass all five. If you pass some subtests and not others, you retake only the subtests you did not pass, and your best attempt on each subtest is retained. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
The time per question differs sharply by subtest: about 93 seconds on ELAR and 105 seconds on Mathematics, but only about 52 seconds on Fine Arts, Health and PE. Practice each subtest at its own pace.
