The Six Domains
Exam Framework at a Glance
| Domain | Content | Share of Test | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Number Concepts | 14% | 14 questions |
| II | Patterns and Algebra | 33% | 33 questions |
| III | Geometry and Measurement | 19% | 19 questions |
| IV | Probability and Statistics | 14% | 14 questions |
| V | Mathematical Processes and Perspectives | 10% | 10 questions |
| VI | Mathematical Learning, Instruction and Assessment | 10% | 10 questions |
Domain II is the largest single block: one-third of the test covers sequences, functions of every family and calculus. Domains V and VI together are one-fifth of the test and reward clear reasoning about proof, connections and teaching rather than heavy computation.
Calculator and Formulas
You must bring your own graphing calculator, and it must be on the approved list: TI-73, TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus CE, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, or a TI-Nspire handheld with the TI-84 Plus keypad attached for the whole test. No calculator is provided at the test center. Staff clear the calculator's memory before and after testing, so back up any programs or apps you care about, and do not count on stored programs. Manuals are not allowed.
A Definitions and Formulas page is available on screen. It includes calculus, probability and algebra facts (such as the imaginary unit and the inverse of a 2×2 matrix), compound interest, circle, area and volume formulas, and the Laws of Sines and Cosines. Read it in the official preparation manual before you study, so you know which formulas you will see and which you must remember.
How the Test Is Scored
Your score is based on the number of scored questions you answer correctly, converted to a scale from 100 to 300. You need 240 to pass. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question. Some questions are being tried out for future tests and do not count, but you cannot tell which ones, so treat every question as scored.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Applied, multi-step problems: rates, percents, finance formulas, growth and decay, optimization and modeling with functions
- Algebra and function analysis: solving equations and inequalities, asymptotes, inverses, compositions, transformations and sequence terms
- Structure and proof questions: closure and field properties, which step of a proof is justified by which property, which conditional is equivalent, which argument is valid
- Questions built on a described figure, a data table, a matrix, a scatterplot description or a set of proof steps
- Geometry and measurement problems with circles, polygons, solids, conics, transformations and vectors
- Calculus, probability and statistics problems that need a clear setup and good calculator use
- Classroom scenarios: a student's work or a lesson situation, followed by the best instructional or assessment decision
What Happens After the Test
- Scores post at 10:00 p.m. Central time on the published score report date for your testing window.
- Your report shows whether you passed and gives performance information by domain.
- If you do not pass, use the domain information to focus your study before you retest. Texas limits how many times you may take a certification test, so make each attempt count; confirm current retake rules with the Texas Education Agency and your preparation program.
