What the Test Covers
Test Design by Domain
| Domain | Title | Competencies | Approximate Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Instruction and Assessment: Components of Literacy | 001 to 008 | 57% |
| II | Instruction and Assessment: Resources and Procedures | 009 and 010 | 14% |
| III | Meeting the Needs of Individual Students | 011 and 012 | 14% |
| IV | Professional Knowledge and Leadership | 013 and 014 | 14% |
The official percentages are rounded, so they add up to slightly less than 100. Domain I alone accounts for more than half of your score, so the eight components of literacy deserve the largest share of your study time.

How the Test Is Scored
Your result is a scaled score from 100 to 300, and you need 240 to pass. The test is criterion-referenced, which means you are measured against a fixed standard set by Texas educators, not against other candidates. Some questions may be pilot questions that do not count toward your score, and you cannot tell which ones they are, so give every question your best effort. Your score is based on the number of scored questions you answer correctly, with no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Classroom and intervention scenarios that ask for the most appropriate first step, strategy or grouping for a student or group
- Transcripts of a student reading aloud, running records and informal reading inventory results to interpret
- Descriptions of an intervention activity or a list of steps in a strategy, followed by several questions about its purpose
- Situations involving English learners, students with dyslexia and collaboration with other specialists
- Theory and research questions that ask which practice a theory supports or which conclusion a study justifies
- Coaching, data-presentation, family and professional-development situations that test literacy leadership
Score Reports
- Scores are released at 10:00 p.m. Central time on the score report date for your testing period, listed on the official testing website.
- The report shows whether you passed and how you performed in each domain, which tells you where to focus if you need to retest.
- Texas limits the number of times a candidate may take a certification test, so prepare thoroughly before your first attempt and check the current retake policy before scheduling again.
