Exam Overview
Understanding The Toefl Ibt
The TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) is one of the most widely recognized English-language tests in the world, accepted by more than 10,000 colleges, universities, and agencies in over 150 countries. Developed and administered by ETS, it assesses the English proficiency of non-native speakers who plan to study or work in English.
Exam Pattern
The test has four sections, taken in this order. Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive: your performance on the first module determines whether the second module is harder or easier. Item counts and times vary slightly with the route.
| Section | Tasktypes | Items | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | CompletetheWords·ReadinDailyLife·ReadanAcademicPassage | Upto50 | 30min |
| Listening | ListenandChooseaResponse·ListentoaConversation·Listentoan | Upto47 | 29min |

ETS redesigned the TOEFL iBT. The older format (0–30 section scores, long three-to-four-passage Reading sets, four Speaking tasks, and the Integrated and Independent Writing tasks) has been replaced by the shorter adaptive format described here.
Scoring
Each section is scored on a 1–6 band scale in half-band increments. The overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. Bands align with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). During a transition period, score reports also show a comparable score on the older 0–120 scale for institutions that still use it.
| TOEFLiBTband | CEFRlevel | Generaldescription |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | C2 | Mastery |
| 5–5 .5 | C1 | Advanced |
| 4–4 .5 | B2 | Upperintermediate |
| 3–3 .5 | B1 | Intermediate |

Administration and Delivery
ETS develops and administers the TOEFL iBT, sets the questions, and sends official score reports. The test is delivered on computer at authorized test centers and as the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, taken at home with a live remote proctor. Scores remain valid for two years from the test date.
