Future elementary teachers often see two Praxis test codes and wonder which to take: Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) and Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (5018). Both test the content you will teach in the elementary grades, reading and language arts, math, science and social studies, but they are structured very differently.

The short answer

Take the one your state requires. States choose their own Praxis tests and passing scores, and some have switched from one test to the other over time. Check the requirements for your state on the ETS Praxis site or your state education department before you register.

NameElementary Education: Multiple SubjectsElementary Education: Content Knowledge
Structure4 separately timed subtests: Reading and Language Arts (5002), Mathematics (5003), Social Studies (5004), Science (5005)1 test covering all four subjects
Time4 hours 35 minutes in total150 minutes

ScoresA separate score for each subtest; you must pass each oneOne score
ETS fee$180 for the combined test (subtests can also be taken separately)$130

What the structure means for you

  • 5001: pass every subject. Because each subtest is scored on its own, a strong reading score cannot make up for a weak math score. The upside is that if you pass three subtests, you only retake the one you missed.
  • 5018: one combined score. Strengths in one area can help balance a weaker area, but if you fall short you retake the whole test.
  • Time on task. The 5001 is much longer in total. Many candidates take its subtests on different days to keep their focus.

How to prepare

  1. Confirm your state's test code and passing score(s).
  2. Download the free Study Companion for your test from ETS and turn its content categories into a checklist.
  3. Start with math. It is the subtest many elementary candidates find hardest, and it rewards daily practice.
  4. For 5001, plan a schedule per subtest; for 5018, study all four subjects in rotation.
  5. Take timed practice tests in the real format before test day.

Practice both, then decide

If you are still choosing, a short set of questions from each exam is the fastest way to feel the difference. TTP Prep has free practice questions for both:

Each exam on TTP Prep includes a study guide, two full-length practice tests with an explanation for every answer, flashcards and a cheat sheet. The first three chapters, 10 practice questions and 30 flashcards are free, with no card needed.
