The Five Domains
Domains, Competencies and Weights
| Domain | Competencies | Weight | About How Many Questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| I Oral and Written Language Development | 0001 to 0002 | 15% | 19 |
| II Mathematics | 0003 to 0005 | 27% | 34 |
| III Science | 0006 to 0008 | 24% | 30 |
| IV Social Studies | 0009 to 0011 | 24% | 30 |
| V The Arts | 0012 to 0013 | 10% | 12 |
Mathematics is the largest domain. Science and social studies together make up nearly half of the test, so a candidate who studies only literacy and math will not pass.
How the Test Is Scored
Your raw score is the number of scored questions you answer correctly. It is converted to a scaled score from 100 to 300, and you pass with 220 or higher. Some questions are being tried out for future use and do not count, but they are not marked, so treat every question as if it counts.
There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every question.
Your score report also shows a performance index for each domain, from four plus signs (well above the passing level) to one plus sign (well below it). Use these signs to decide what to study if you need to retake the test.
Test Center or Online
- At a test center you may take a restroom break, but the clock keeps running.
- With online proctoring you test at home, cannot take breaks, and must meet the system and room requirements.
- At a test center you see a preliminary pass or not pass result when you finish. Online candidates wait for the official score report.
What Kinds of Questions to Expect
- Content questions at an adult level: a grammar error to find, a fraction problem to solve, a science investigation to judge, a map or data table to interpret
- Classroom scenarios: a teacher's goal, a student's work or an assessment result, followed by the most appropriate next step
- Student work samples: early writing, spelling attempts, math solutions with an error
- Questions about adapting instruction for English learners and students with exceptional needs
- Ohio-specific questions on state and local government and Ohio history
- Arts questions on design principles, musical elements and teaching approaches
